Telecom Namibia And Angola Telecom Forge Partnership To Boost Digital Connectivity Along Southern Africa’s Coast

Digital connectivity along the western coast of Southern Africa is set for significant enhancement following the signing of a memorandum of understanding and a commercial terms agreement between Telecom Namibia and Angola Telecom in Swakopmund.

This strategic partnership establishes a direct connection between the national telecommunications providers of Namibia and Angola.

Through this agreement, Angola Telecom will gain access to international capacity via the Equiano subsea cable, which lands in Swakopmund, while also laying the foundation for further collaboration with Angola Telecom’s SARSSy Subsea Cable System.

The agreement was officially concluded during a ceremony attended by government representatives, the Mayor of Swakopmund, and executives from both companies. The partnership aims to strengthen digital infrastructure through cooperative regional efforts.

This collaboration not only supports regional integration but also enhances international connectivity, positioning the Erongo region as a crucial digital hub for Southern Africa, according to Telecom Namibia.

Moreover, the agreement aligns with Namibia’s Vision 2030, the Sixth National Development Plan, and the Harambee Prosperity Plan II, which emphasise digital infrastructure as a vital driver of economic development, improved service delivery, and industrial growth.

Namibia’s Minister of ICT, Emma Theofelus, praised the agreement as a transition from viewing connectivity as a luxury to recognising it as a fundamental necessity, noting that strong connectivity is essential for economic growth and regional unity.

In agreement, Angola’s Minister of ICT, Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira, characterised the deal as a strong political mandate aimed at deepening bilateral relationships.

“The memorandum of understanding is a tangible step towards creating a regional submarine cable system that will enhance international connectivity, bolster communication security, and improve the competitiveness of both economies,” he stated.

Telecom Namibia CEO, Dr Stanley Shanapinda, remarked that the agreement demonstrates the result of detailed planning and joint efforts.

“By utilising the Equiano Subsea Cable and partnering with Angola Telecom, we are enhancing network resilience, expanding international bandwidth, and establishing Namibia as a key digital transit hub for the region,” he added.

Both parties reiterated their commitment to ongoing collaboration, transparency, and the development of resilient digital infrastructure that fosters economic integration across Southern Africa.
