The riveting historical drama Palestine 36, directed by Annemarie Jacir, is making its debut in Kenya as part of a special showcase at Unseen Nairobi, featuring 25 screenings throughout April. Following its successful run across the Arab world and at various international film festivals, the film opened in Nairobi on April 1. It will. It will continue screening through April 30, providing an extended opportunity for local audiences to engage with this powerful narrative.

Set against the backdrop of the 1936–1939 Great Strike and the lead-up to the Arab Revolt, Palestine 36 tells the poignant story of Yusuf, a young man navigating life amid the unrest in Mandate Palestine. As tensions rise due to increasing Jewish immigration from Europe and escalating Palestinian demands for independence, Yusuf’s journey unfolds, highlighting themes of hope, love, and resistance during a tumultuous period under British rule.

The film has already garnered significant acclaim, premiering to sold-out crowds at the Toronto International Film Festival before embarking on a global festival circuit. It has received numerous accolades, including the Audience Award at the São Paulo International Film Festival, Best Film at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and the Snow Leopard Special Jury Award at the Asian World Film Festival, among others.

Palestine 36 also earned notable recognition on prestigious international awards platforms, being shortlisted for Best International Feature at both the Academy Awards and the European Film Awards. Additionally, it received a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The ensemble cast includes renowned actors such as Hiam Abbass, Kamel El Basha, Saleh Bakri, and Jeremy Irons, as well as emerging talents like Yafa Bakri and Karim Daoud Anaya. Produced by Ossama Bawardi alongside a team of international co-producers, the film showcases stunning cinematography by Hélène Louvart and an evocative score by Ben Frost. It is distributed in the Arab world by MAD Distribution, further solidifying its global reach and impact.
