South Africa’s Parliament has announced a call for nominations to fill four upcoming vacancies on the council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa). This announcement was made by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
An Icasa representative noted that the current councillors nearing the end of their terms are Cathrine Mushi, Thabisa Faye, Ntombiza Sithole, and Nompucuko Nontombana.
Communications Minister Solly Malatsi emphasised, “The effectiveness of our communications regulator hinges on the quality of its council members. We seek skilled, independent, and dedicated professionals to uphold the public interest and to cultivate a fair, competitive, and innovative communications atmosphere in South Africa.”
Typically, Icasa councillors serve four-year terms from the date of their appointment. The council’s chairman, currently Mothibi Ramusi, holds a five-year term.
Recent changes to the Icasa board were made in February 2025, with the appointment of Karabo Mohale, Charley Lewis, Joshua Maumela, and Andrew Matseke. Notably, Lewis was reinstated after having served in the previous term.
Nominations must be submitted to Parliament by March 27, 2026. Following this, all candidates will undergo interviews and vetting by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications before the shortlisted candidates are forwarded to Minister Malatsi for final selection.
