Africa’s largest fresh produce market, the Joburg Market, has intensified operations as South Africa prepares to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit later this month, placing food security at the heart of its agenda.
Footage captured on Monday shows workers unloading crates of fresh fruit and vegetables from trucks, sorting and preparing produce for local distribution and export. The bustling scenes reflect the pivotal role the market plays in ensuring that South African farmers reach both domestic and global markets.
Marketing and PR Manager at Grow Fresh Produce Agents, Anja Burger, said the G20 summit provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen international partnerships. “Better relationships with countries outside South Africa are a fantastic opportunity for our farmers to flourish,” Burger explained. She added that the summit also offers a platform to showcase South Africa as a forward-looking nation, ready to embrace innovation and global collaboration.
Economist and journalist Mudiwa Gavaza noted that food insecurity has emerged as a pressing global concern, particularly across Africa. “With South Africa chairing the G20 in 2025, issues like these are brought to the fore,” he stated.
The G20 Summit, taking place in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 November, will focus on global food security, climate-smart agriculture, and resilient food systems, while promoting investment in agricultural infrastructure and equitable access to nutrition across Africa.
