Malawi Takes Significant Steps Towards Digital Inclusion At Africa Broadband Mapping National Event

The Universal Service Fund (USF) in Malawi participates in the Africa Broadband Mapping National Event from October 7 to 9, 2025, at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe. This event is part of the larger Africa Broadband Mapping Project, which is co-led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and supported by funding from the European Union (EU).

This initiative brings together 11 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa, including Malawi, to enhance broadband mapping systems, identify connectivity gaps, align standards, and promote inclusive digital transformation across the continent.

In his opening remarks, Ronald Tembo, Head of the Universal Service Fund, emphasised Malawi’s ongoing commitment to closing the digital divide through strategic broadband expansion, digital skills training, and access to affordable ICT services. He noted that effective broadband mapping is crucial in these efforts, as it provides essential data and insights that can steer targeted investments and guarantee equitable access to digital services for all communities.

Nicholas Kanyenda, Deputy Director of Technologies and Standards, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of precise broadband mapping for assessing coverage disparities and improving service quality. He emphasised that data-driven strategies inform sound policy decisions, supporting Malawi’s broader goals for digital inclusion.

The USF reiterated its dedication to advancing Malawi’s Broadband Mapping and Digital Literacy Programme, which aims to empower communities, encourage collaboration, and accelerate the movement toward a digitally inclusive society. The Fund views participation in the Africa Broadband Mapping initiative as a vital step toward evidence-based planning and innovation, ensuring that digital transformation efforts are inclusive and leave no one behind.

By participating in this regional event, Malawi is reinforcing its position in shaping a connected future for Africa based on collaboration, inclusivity, and sustainable technological growth.
