Egypt’s Music Scene Goes Global — Thanks To Streaming Powerhouses

Once known for its ancient treasures, Egypt makes waves with its burgeoning music scene. Thanks to the streaming revolution, particularly Spotify, Egyptian artists are breaking borders and going global.

In a landmark reveal, Spotify released its Loud & Clear report in Egypt, highlighting astonishing growth. Royalties for Egyptian artists from Spotify surged more than fivefold since 2022, with a 100% increase between 2023 and 2024.

“Egyptian music is having a moment—and it’s just the beginning,” said Mark Abou Jaoude, Spotify’s Head of Music for MENA and Pakistan. “Streaming isn’t just about getting heard anymore; it’s about building real careers and reshaping culture.”

Independent artists are at the forefront of this evolution, with over 90% of Spotify royalties in Egypt going to indie musicians or those with smaller labels in 2024—one of the highest rates globally. Genres like Mahraganat and Egyptian hip-hop have transitioned from underground clubs to streaming charts, redefining the sound of contemporary Egypt.

The global demand for Egyptian music is clear, with more than 80% of royalties earned from international listeners in countries such as the US, UK, Germany, Brazil, India, and Indonesia. In 2024 alone, first-time Spotify listeners discovered Egyptian music over 480 million times.

Domestically, the growth is equally impressive, with local streams of Egyptian music rising over 70% last year. Since Spotify’s launch in the region in 2018, domestic listening has increased by nearly 450%, with over 80% of Spotify Egypt’s Daily Top 50 featuring homegrown tracks.

Moreover, Arabic is emerging as one of the fastest-growing musical languages globally, strongly positioning Egypt in this trend. Spotify actively supports this movement through initiatives like RADAR Arabia and EQUAL Arabia, fostering a new generation of talent. With MENA being the world’s fastest-growing music market, Egyptian artists are turning their global ambitions into reality.
