Interview: NRG Radio Uganda Discusses Media Sustainability Issues Ahead Of Upcoming East African Broadcasters Convention In Kampala, Uganda.

Christine Mawadri, Executive Director and Head of Strategic Partnerships at NRG Radio Uganda, has confirmed her participation as a key speaker at the upcoming Broadcasters Convention—East Africa 2025. She is strongly committed to driving dialogue and innovation within East Africa’s broadcast media landscape.

“Uganda and the East African market need more thought leadership platforms to shape the future of media. Opportunities like this are rare,” Mawadri noted. “It’s important to be part of this initiative and share insights that can spark transformation.”

Ahead of the event, Mawadri highlighted critical innovations for media sustainability. These include developing a vibrant Radio Creative Market that values and uplifts audio content, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) across programming and operations, and creating a regional Creative Think Tank for research and knowledge sharing.

She also pointed out major structural challenges hampering growth in the sector, chief among them being the lack of professional training despite the region having over 300 radio stations. Mawadri stressed the need for stronger data and analytics infrastructure to support evidence-based decisions.

Other issues she raised include poor engagement with Gen-Z audiences, outdated equipment, limited exposure to global creative trends, and the absence of intellectual property protection for radio creatives—factors that leave much content underappreciated and unprotected.

“I’m excited about the networking and knowledge sharing this convention will offer,” Mawadri said. “I hope participants walk away with ideas and connections that can reshape storytelling and improve audience service.”

The Broadcasters Convention—East Africa 2025 will be held from 24 to 25 June 2025 in Kampala, Uganda. Organised by Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) in collaboration with regional partners, it will gather broadcasters, innovators, regulators, and content creators.

The convention’s theme is “Local Content, Local Channels, Local Programming—Building Value In A Digital Ecosystem. “It will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, and practical workshops on digital transformation, monetisation, storytelling, and audience analytics.
