Funding For Digital Radio And Services – Resolving Challenges And Taking Advantage Of Opportunities

As Africa’s radio and digital audio sectors navigate a rapidly changing digital landscape, one urgent challenge stands out: sustaining revenue and ensuring long-term financial viability.

Radio is still among the most powerful media platforms, reaching millions in urban and rural areas. Conventional advertising models are, however, under siege. Ad budgets are declining, and behemoths of global streaming and social media sites have exploded online advertising as viewers stream onto mobile apps, streaming services, and podcasts. Radio broadcasters across Africa face a defining moment.

Questions about how to effectively and successfully fund digital radio and audio services in Africa are being asked, and stridently so! Key challenges include falling local advertising revenue, rising production costs for high-quality regional and niche content, and limited audience ability to pay for subscriptions or premium offerings — models that have succeeded in wealthier markets but often fall short in Africa.

Yet innovative solutions are emerging. Many stations are moving beyond traditional 30-second ad slots by developing branded content and sponsorships, where advertisers fund custom programming. Community-supported models, including membership programs, listener donations, and crowdfunding, are gaining ground, especially among niche and local broadcasters with loyal followings. Public-private partnerships between broadcasters, telecom companies, and government agencies are also opening new funding pathways.

Benjamin Pius, CEO at Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), said. “Africa’s radio sector stands at a tipping point. To survive and thrive, players must constantly rethink their business and commercial models and embrace bold, innovative approaches that meet the needs of today’s digital audience. Success depends on adaptability, creativity, and a deep understanding of what local listeners value — and can afford.”

In light of this, key players and industry stakeholders will converge in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 24-25 June 2025 to reimagine radio and digital audio for an African market defined by youthful, mobile-first audiences and fierce global competition.
