Radio Broadcasters To Tackle Content Piracy And IP Issues At Industry Convention In Johannesburg, South Africa

Across Africa’s rapidly growing audio and digital broadcasting landscape, the shadow of content piracy continues to undermine creativity, investment, and innovation.

Despite the continent’s vibrant radio and digital sound sectors, content creators and rights holders are losing millions annually due to unauthorised use and poor enforcement of intellectual property rights.

To shed some light on this issue and assess the viable pathways forward, the upcoming Radio Broadcasting Convention – Africa 2025 – which will take place on 24-25 June 2025 at the Protea Hotel, Balalaika Sandton, in Johannesburg, South Africa – will spotlight this topic, taking a deep dive into the state-of-play in Africa and solutions to safeguarding intellectual property.

To the conveners Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), Southern Africa Broadcasting Association (SABA), and the event’s host – the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) – this conversation is not just timely—it’s essential.

“In Africa, content is one of our greatest assets, but without robust protection, we risk stalling the industry’s growth,” said Benjamin Pius, Publisher of Broadcast Media Africa. “This discussion will help unpack how we can move from reactive enforcement to proactive protection of intellectual property in radio and digital sound broadcasting.”

Experts from the legal, regulatory, creative, and tech sectors will share practical solutions, from modernising copyright laws to deploying AI-driven anti-piracy technologies and forging regional collaborations for cross-border enforcement.

The insights shared during this session will be critical for broadcasters, content creators, policymakers, rights organisations, and anyone working to secure the future of Africa’s creative economy.
