Makemation: Pioneering AI And Youth Resilience In African Cinema

Africa’s leading AI-themed film, Makemation, has made waves at Nigerian cinemas, grossing an impressive US$20,438 in just four days. This Nigerian-produced movie, which explores themes of dreams, technology, and determination, debuted powerfully at the local box office, reporting earnings of US$13,045 from Friday to Sunday and reaching US$20,438 by Monday.

Directed by Michael Akinrogunde and produced by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji at Rise Interactive Studios, Makemation is a milestone in African cinema. It’s the continent’s first film to focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), skillfully integrating this complex topic into a poignant narrative about youth resilience and technological empowerment.

The story centres around Zara Sodangi, a 17-year-old from a struggling community near Lagos. Faced with crippling poverty, her father’s illness, and her mother’s relentless efforts to sustain the family, Zara clings to her dreams. Her life takes a significant turn when she gains admission to the prestigious Makemation Institute, Nigeria’s foremost tech academy.

As the plot unfolds, Zara embarks on a journey of growth and self-discovery. Initially intimidated by her new environment and the intricacies of AI, she quickly discovers her mission: to apply technology to address real-world issues in her community. With her personal experiences as inspiration, Zara devises innovative health, education, and food security solutions, becoming a beacon of hope and advocacy for her people.

The film’s producer, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, is a renowned Nigerian social entrepreneur committed to youth empowerment. Her efforts through Rise Networks have garnered numerous accolades, including recognition as one of 101 Young African Leaders by the African Business Forum. Through Makemation, she continues to harness storytelling and technology to inspire a new generation of visionary African youth.
