MTN Nigeria Surpasses 100 Million Subscribers As Mobile Market Continues To Expand

MTN Nigeria has surpassed the 100-million subscriber milestone for the first time, strengthening its position as the country’s largest mobile network operator.

According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), MTN ended July 2026 with 100.86 million active subscribers, up from 98.64 million in June. The addition of 2.22 million subscribers represents the operator’s strongest monthly growth so far this year and lifted its market share to 51.76%.

The milestone comes as Nigeria’s overall active mobile subscriber base grew to 195.1 million in July, compared with 192.23 million in June. MTN now accounts for more than half of the country’s active mobile connections.

The operator also maintained its lead in mobile internet subscriptions, recording 84.1 million in July, equivalent to 53.5% of the market. Airtel followed with 56.8 million, while Globacom recorded 15.6 million.

Nigeria’s broader connectivity market is also seeing increased demand for data. Mobile data consumption reached a record 1.66 million terabytes in July, extending a four-month upward trend. Broadband subscriptions rose to 124.4 million, pushing broadband penetration to 57.4%.

MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola has previously attributed the company’s subscriber growth to stronger customer additions and rising demand for data services.

However, the rapid expansion of MTN’s customer base also places greater pressure on the operator to maintain network quality and capacity.

Crossing the 100-million mark gives MTN a significantly larger customer base to grow revenues across data, fintech, and other digital services. The scale of the milestone, however, will ultimately be measured not only by subscriber numbers, but by the operator’s ability to convert that growth into sustained customer engagement and commercial value.
