Ghana: Subsea Cables Repair May Take Up to Five Weeks – Authorities Say

July 21, 2024

A A

The authorities in Ghana have announced that it will take at least five weeks to repair the damaged subsea cables causing internet outages across West and Central Africa.

This cable break has disrupted internet and telecommunications-linked businesses, including banks, mobile phone operations, money transfer agencies and stock exchange markets throughout the region.

BMA understands that Ghana’s National Communications Authority has held a meeting with the four subsea cable landing service providers and mobile network operators. The service providers have located the approximate location of the damage and have made preparations to dispatch repair vessels.

The regulator said, “The cable landing service providers have indicated an estimated time frame of a minimum of five weeks for full-service restoration from when the vessels are dispatched to the various locations.”

However, it is estimated that full-service restoration will take at least five weeks from when the vessels are dispatched to the various locations.

MainOne, which is owned by data centre operator Equinix, has indicated that preliminary analysis suggests some form of seismic activity on the seabed caused the break to its cable.
