BMA’s View: OTT Streaming – The Art Of Taking Local Content To Global Audiences, Profitably!

Resolving the challenge of profitably streaming locally originated content to international audiences is a multifaceted endeavour that demands innovative strategies, technology adaptation, and understanding of diverse markets. 

Firstly, to take advantage of streaming services to give your content a truly global reach, localisation is paramount. Investment in the translation and adaptation of content to suit several cultural nuances, references, humour, and societal norms that resonate with the local audience of the different regions will be crucial. Research has deemed such efforts to increase content acceptance and viewer engagement. 

Secondly, content streamers and platforms must seek to utilise data analytics to understand audience preferences and get a deeper understanding of market dynamics and regulatory environments of the regions they aim to reach. This is because different countries have different copyright laws, taxation policies, and internet censorship rules, which can significantly impact the profitability and feasibility of streaming content internationally. 

Lastly, innovative revenue models play a role in ensuring profitability. Subscription models, advertisement-based revenue, and pay-per-view options can be tailored according to each region’s economic conditions and consumer behaviour. For example, in markets with low willingness to pay for subscriptions, ad-supported models may be more successful.

In conclusion, streaming locally originated content to international audiences profitably requires a holistic approach encompassing content localisation, technological innovation, understanding of market dynamics, and adaptable revenue models. By addressing these aspects, content creators and distributors can expand their global footprint and engage with diverse audiences in a meaningful and profitable manner.
