Rwanda: Royal FM Kigali Launches New Broadcasting Studio Powered By Lawo Solutions

Rwanda has made a groundbreaking move in the broadcasting industry with the launch of 94.3 Royal FM, the first IP radio station in East Africa. This cutting-edge studio, situated in Kigali, is a pioneer in integrating advanced Lawo virtual radio solutions.

The establishment of the new studio at 94.3 Royal FM is a game-changer in the broadcasting world. It has revolutionised the industry by replacing traditional XLR cables with a Cisco switch to distribute video and audio signals (AES67) and control the facility. The Lawo virtual mixer at the core of this setup seamlessly integrates all studio components, while the Multicam video system, responding to microphone signals and controlled by the audio mixer, offers an unparalleled immersive experience to the audience.

The studio enhances flexibility and efficiency with the AVT IP telephone hybrid, managing all incoming calls with ease. The studio significantly boosts productivity and is designed for minimal power consumption and fewer cables. Social media platforms like WhatsApp can be effortlessly integrated, transforming any gaming PC into a media source. This setup allows remote system control and enables customised audio experiences for different shows, making cutting-edge production a reality today and in the future.

Professor Simon Gicharu, the visionary Chairman of Royal FM Group, expressed his excitement about the project, saying: “At Royal FM, we are not just embracing the latest technology, we are shaping the future of broadcasting in Rwanda. By integrating cutting-edge systems like Lawo, MultiCAM, AVT, RAVENNA, and AES67, we are challenging the norms and expanding the horizons of radio. This innovation is a testament to our commitment to excellence and our vision for a more connected, dynamic, and forward-thinking Rwanda. Our new studio is living proof that, with the right technology and vision, we can transform our media dream into reality, today and in the future.”

A standout feature of Royal FM’s new facility is the incorporation of countersunk screens, evoking the look and feel of an alien interface.

Gicharu added: “Our mission is to revolutionise radio by integrating advanced technology, ensuring seamless compatibility with new media, reducing costs, and delivering an exceptional experience to our audience. Thanks to Fred Martin Kiwalabye, the Head Technical Engineer at Mediacity Ads Ltd., for spearheading this innovative project. We are proud to be at the forefront of this technological advancement.”

Jesse K. Maxella, CEO of Royal FM, remarked: “When we asked for a solution, they knew the right workflow to make a difference. With several inputs and just one switch, we are harnessing the power of innovation to create a more immersive and dynamic listening experience. This transformation is about more than just technology; it’s about setting a new standard for excellence in broadcasting.”
