Kenya Opens Draft National AI Policy For Public Consultation

The Government of Kenya has launched a nationwide public consultation on its draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, inviting stakeholders to help shape the country’s approach to AI development, governance and innovation.

Led by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, the consultation forms part of the implementation of Kenya’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (2025–2030), which seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for the responsible development, deployment and regulation of AI and other emerging technologies.

The ministry has called on representatives from academia, industry, civil society, research institutions, start-ups, government agencies and the wider public to review the draft policy and provide feedback before the consultation closes on 4 August.

Launching the consultation in Nairobi, Principal Secretary for the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy, John Tanui, emphasised the importance of inclusive stakeholder participation in shaping the country’s AI future.

He noted that the contributions received during the consultation would help create “a trusted, inclusive and innovation-driven AI ecosystem” capable of accelerating Kenya’s digital transformation while strengthening its global competitiveness.

According to the ministry, the proposed policy is designed to foster innovation, expand digital infrastructure, build AI skills and talent, promote sustainable development and enhance the country’s economic resilience. It also seeks to establish governance principles that encourage the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies across both the public and private sectors.

The public consultation is being conducted in line with Kenya’s constitutional requirement for citizen participation in the development of national policies, ensuring that the country’s AI framework reflects the priorities and perspectives of a broad range of stakeholders before it is finalised.
