BMA Feature: Sudanese Citizens Return Home from Uganda in Voluntary Repatriation Programme

KHARTOUM, SUDAN – Scores of displaced Sudanese citizens have returned to Khartoum from Entebbe, Uganda, on the government’s 20th flight under its voluntary repatriation programme.

In a video captured at Khartoum International Airport on Monday, families are seen boarding buses to undergo security screening. Airport officials checked their papers and luggage before they entered the arrival terminal, where health officials took their temperatures.

The displaced individuals left Sudan because of fighting that broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Sudanese army announced in March 2025 that it had restored control of the capital, despite the RSF’s claims that fighting was still underway.

While many welcomed hospitality from neighbouring Uganda, the daily challenges they faced became increasingly hard to endure.

“It is now two and a half years since I left Sudan because of the war situation,” says Mustafa Mohammed, one of the returnees. “Our situation in Sudan was terrible, and we had to leave our country with our family members for Uganda. We resided in Uganda and were working, but the standard of living was tough.”

Mohammed Adam Abdullah, another returnee, says: “Our homeland is valuable, and people in neighbouring countries received us warmly and gave us the means of earning a livelihood, but when everything became okay, we came back to our beloved nation.”

The return program continues to support returnees in their safe return to Khartoum.
