Reinventing Broadcasting: How African Media Houses Can Become Full-Scale Media Enterprises

African broadcasters are operating in an increasingly complex media environment where traditional broadcasting is no longer enough to secure audience relevance, commercial sustainability and long-term growth. As audiences shift across television, radio, streaming, social media and digital platforms, media houses are being challenged to rethink not only how they distribute content, but how they operate as businesses.

This transformation will take centre stage at the Broadcasters Convention – Southern Africa 2026, taking place from 22–25 October 2026 at Avani+ Barbarons, Mahé, Seychelles, where industry leaders will examine how African media organisations can evolve into full-scale, multi-platform media enterprises.

The session, “Reinventing Broadcasting: How African Media Houses Can Become Full-Scale Media Enterprises,” will explore the strategic and commercial changes required for broadcasters to move beyond conventional models and build organisations capable of competing across the wider media ecosystem.

For many African broadcasters, the traditional model of relying heavily on advertising, linear television and radio audiences is under increasing pressure. Fragmented audiences, changing consumer behaviour, digital competition and rising content and technology costs are forcing media organisations to reconsider how they create value.

Becoming a full-scale media enterprise requires a broader approach—one that combines strong content brands with digital platforms, streaming, data, audience intelligence, content licensing, partnerships, events, commerce and other diversified revenue opportunities. It also requires broadcasters to rethink organisational structures, technology investments, talent strategies and the role of innovation in their businesses.

The discussion will consider how African media houses can build stronger and more diversified business models while retaining their public value, cultural relevance and connection with local audiences. It will also examine how broadcasters can leverage their existing content libraries, trusted brands, audience relationships and production capabilities to create new commercial opportunities across multiple platforms.

At the heart of the conversation will be a fundamental question: What does a broadcaster need to become to remain relevant and commercially sustainable in Africa’s rapidly changing media landscape?

The session forms part of the broader programme of the 10th edition of the Broadcasters Convention – Southern Africa, which will bring together broadcasters, regulators, technology providers, content producers, advertisers, investors and other media industry stakeholders to explore the future of broadcasting and media across the continent.

The convention is hosted by SBC and convened by Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) and the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA), providing a strategic platform for industry leaders to share experiences, identify opportunities and shape the next chapter of African broadcasting.

As the boundaries between broadcasting, digital media, streaming, technology and content continue to converge, the ability to reinvent will increasingly determine which African media organisations thrive—and which struggle to remain relevant.

The future of broadcasting may no longer be about being the best broadcaster. It may be about becoming a better media enterprise.
