South Africa: Sentech, MDDA, And GCIS Unite To Transform Community Radio Landscape

In a significant advancement for South Africa’s community media sector, Sentech SOC Ltd, the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) have entered into a groundbreaking partnership. This agreement was officially signed during the Sentech Africa Tech Week at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on May 13, 2026.

This collaboration aims to drive the digital transformation for 22 select community media broadcasters, providing them with essential tools to enhance their operations. The initiative will enable these radio stations to access live streaming services, create responsive websites, develop mobile applications, and host their content on the Freevision Play platform, significantly broadening their audience outreach.

Freevision Play is an innovative over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform developed by Sentech, designed to facilitate direct distribution of audio and video content to audiences over the internet, complementing traditional broadcasting. By joining this platform, community radio stations will expand their reach far beyond local frequencies, tapping into national and international audiences. Participants will have the opportunity to live-stream their content, grow their online presence, and ensure a sustainable digital footprint alongside their existing radio operations.

MDDA CEO, Shoeshoe Qhu, emphasised the importance of this agreement as a pivotal step towards implementing the agency’s digital strategy. “This partnership addresses the pressing need for sustainable digital infrastructure in our sector. Community media is essential in representing underrepresented voices, and this initiative will amplify those voices across various digital platforms.”

Nomonde Mnukwa, acting director-general of GCIS, noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader mandate for communication. “GCIS is dedicated to providing all South Africans with access to diverse and reliable information. Supporting the digital transformation of community media is crucial to this goal, and we are proud to collaborate with MDDA and Sentech on this project.”

Sentech CEO Tebogo Leshope expressed optimism about the partnership, seeing it as an opportunity to leverage the organisation’s strategic strengths to support community broadcasting. “Sentech’s mission is to connect South Africa, and this partnership allows us to realise that vision in a significant way. Through Freevision Play, community radio stations can reach audiences effectively, enhancing their relevance and sustainability. We eagerly anticipate working with each station to provide tailored digital solutions that address their unique needs.”

The implementation of this programme will occur in three phases. It will begin with an assessment of the 22 broadcasters’ existing digital readiness, identify infrastructure gaps, and formulate customised digital transformation strategies. The subsequent phases will involve the comprehensive deployment of digital platforms, including installing encoders, developing websites, activating live streaming, and providing training and support for station teams.

This initiative is set to create a lasting impact, equipping community broadcasters with the necessary digital tools and skills to better serve their communities for years to come.
