Tunisia’s Dhafer L’Abidine’s gripping family thriller, “Sophia,” is set to make its mark at the upcoming Manchester Film Festival, with a screening scheduled for March 28 at 2:10 PM at Odeon Screen 11. The festival, renowned for highlighting bold narratives and emerging talents, marks another milestone in the film’s international journey after its successful festival circuit.

“Sophia” tells the compelling story of Emily, who defies her father’s wishes by travelling from London to Tunisia. Her mission is to help her daughter, Sophia, reconnect with her estranged husband. However, the family’s fragile reunion takes a chilling turn when Sophia mysteriously vanishes, igniting a frantic search that reveals deep-seated secrets and tests family bonds. As the tension escalates, Emily must confront harrowing truths and navigate the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

The film debuted at the Marrakech International Film Festival and made a splash in the US during its screening at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, attracting global attention.

Produced through a collaboration between Double A Productions and New Sparta Productions, “Sophia” is written, directed, and produced by L’Abidine himself. The film showcases a talented creative team, including cinematographer Willie Nel, editor Hafedh Laaridhi, production designer Adel Ouni, sound designer Moncef Taleb, and composer Selim Arjoun. MAD World manages worldwide sales, while MAD Distribution handles distribution across the MENA region.

Dhafer L’Abidine, known for his work in British television, international cinema, and significant Arab productions, has established a diverse career. He made his feature directorial debut with “Ghodwa,” which earned the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cairo International Film Festival and was shortlisted for the Golden Globes.

Don’t miss the chance to catch “Sophia” at Manchester Film Festival and experience this powerful tale of love and resilience.
