“Die Kantoor” Debuts On 18th January As Showmax’s Remake Of The Popular Comedy Show – “The Office”

Showmax has released the first trailer for “Die Kantoor,” the Afrikaans-language remake of the globally renowned series “The Office,” which is licensed by BBC Studios. This adaptation will make its debut on African broadcaster DStv, with a preview of the inaugural episode airing on January 18th, followed by a double-bill premiere on Showmax on January 20th. Subsequent episodes will be available weekly on both platforms.

The trailer features Albert Pretorius in the iconic role of the bumbling manager, previously portrayed by Ricky Gervais and Steve Carell. In “Die Kantoor,” Pretorius plays Flip, the charismatic but misguided manager at Deluxe Processed Meats, a company specialising in polony—a processed sausage popular in South Africa. Pretorius describes Flip as akin to Rassie Erasmus, the revered coach of the Springbok rugby team, believing that the documentary crew is creating a “Chasing the Sun” narrative about his journey to uplift his team.

For those unfamiliar with South African culture, “Chasing the Sun” refers to the internationally acclaimed documentary series that chronicles the Springboks’ World Cup triumphs. Pretorius elaborates on his character’s struggle, highlighting that Flip is wrestling with traditional notions of masculinity, particularly within the Afrikaans community. He notes, “Many qualities he aspires to are outdated, and he is largely devoid of them,” which forms the crux of the show’s humour. Flip’s earnest attempts to be liked, despite his many shortcomings, exemplify the show’s cringe comedy.

Over twenty years have elapsed since “The Office” first captivated audiences with its unique mockumentary style. The British version is often hailed as one of the greatest comedy series. At the same time, the American adaptation garnered five Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and became the most-streamed show globally in 2020, inspiring remakes worldwide. “Die Kantoor” marks the format’s 14th international version.

Produced by Rapid Blue, a subsidiary of BBC Studios, “Die Kantoor” boasts SAFTA and Silwerskerm award-winning Bennie Fourie as head writer and director. The cast features a talented ensemble including SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout, Silwerskerm winner Ilse Oppelt, and several other rising stars and established actors. The project reflects a significant cultural moment in South Africa, aiming to blend humour with commentary on societal norms.
