Netflix Africa has partnered with Quizzical Pictures to create a South African adaptation of the popular Brazilian film Ricos de Amor. Titled “Love & Wine,” the film will be produced in Cape Town and the picturesque Western Cape Winelands. Its release on the streaming platform is set for December 5th.
“Love & Wine” boasts an executive production team that includes Odirile Mekwa, JP Potgieter, and Harriet Gavshon, with Amanda Lane directing the project.
The screenplay has been crafted by Amanda Lane, Darryl Bristow-Bovey, and Zelipa Zulu, featuring a talented cast that includes Ntobeko Sishi, Thandolwethu Zondi, Masali Baduza, Thando Thabethe, Bongile Mantsai, Desmond Dube, N’kone Mametja, Simone Neethling, Rorisang Mohapi, and Bohang Moeko.
According to the logline provided by Netflix’s South African PR company, Burson, “Love & Wine” tells the story of a privileged young man who works in his affluent father’s business. He finds himself in a predicament when he falls for a dedicated medical student, leading him to fabricate a more modest backstory. What ensues is a comedic series of chaotic events and heartfelt moments.
The plot centres around Ovee (played by Ntobeko Sishi), a young man determined to showcase that he is more than just wealth. To prove his worth, he enlists the help of his friend and driver Nathi (Thandolwethu Zondi) to explore whether love can truly overcome social barriers. As he vies for an internship at his father Sityebi’s (Bongile Mantsai) winery, Ovee becomes enamoured with a medical student named Amahle (Masali Baduza). Concurrently, Nathi finds himself enjoying the perks of high society and, while pursuing the same internship, begins to fall for the winery’s manager, Lena (Thando Thabethe).
