Africa’s Creative Revolution On Display At Africacomicade Gamathon 2025

African game developers, storytellers, and animators are gaining global recognition as they work to transform the perception of the continent. The rise of gaming and interactive media is becoming a pivotal aspect of Africa’s creative revolution.

This call to action was made during the Africacomicade Gamathon 2025 in Nigeria, following earlier events in Ghana and Kenya. The gathering showcased various African studios’ projects covering gaming, animation, comics, and extended reality (XR). It emphasised that Africa is emerging as a technological innovator rather than a consumer.

Oluwatosin Ogunyebi, Co-founder of Africacomicade, stated in an interview with the Guardian: “Today’s event serves as a significant platform to highlight the work of creatives across Africa. We have studios from different regions showcasing their innovations, allowing people to witness Africans’ contributions in gaming, XR, animation, and comics.”

He stressed the industry’s importance of unity and visibility: “Governments and ministries must recognise us as a cohesive group. A unified body can facilitate better partnerships and support for all.” Ogunyebi also pointed out the educational benefits of gaming, noting, “Gaming transcends entertainment; it’s a valuable tool in education, research, and training. My VR studio uses virtual reality to educate university students and researchers. Parents should understand the significance of this.”

The event also featured the Ark Pitch competition, designed to provide funding to creative studios, enhance their production quality, and help them meet international standards. Ogunyebi announced that the Gamathon would transition to a biennial event to allow developers more time for project development.

Victor Mark-Onyegbu, Director of Community and Grantmaking at Africa No Filter, highlighted the greater implications: “The storytellers will shape Africa’s future. The narratives we craft will influence how the world perceives us.”

He remarked, “For too long, Africa has been depicted as small, impoverished, and chaotic. It is time to shift that narrative.” Africa No Filter also offers resources like Bias Booster and the MAPS Campaign, empowering creators to tell genuine stories without perpetuating stereotypes.

As the African gaming industry thrives, it underscores the continent’s boundless creative potential. Through innovation, collaboration, and institutional support, developers are advancing gaming and esports and redefining Africa’s global image, one game at a time.
