MultiChoice App To Assist With African Language Learning

September 4, 2025

A A

Limu Lab, an innovative application backed by the MultiChoice Innovation Fund (MIF), aims to help children learn and engage with African languages. Since its launch in January 2024, the app has already achieved over 1,000 downloads and successfully piloted its content on Showmax.

The app harnesses technology to create an interactive, engaging, and enjoyable learning experience for young learners exploring indigenous languages. It features animations, gamified activities, and multi-sensory learning tools that promote literacy and build confidence.

Sifiso Danisa, a co-founder of Limu Lab, expressed her frustration in finding quality digital resources for her daughter to learn isiZulu. This led her and her partner, Sphumelele Sibeko, to conceptualise Limu Lab as a solution transforming how children experience and cherish their mother tongues.

Sibeko emphasised their goal of creating a platform that children genuinely enjoy. “We wanted a digital environment where technology connects culture and curiosity,” she noted.

Limu Lab addresses a significant gap in the educational technology landscape: the lack of African language content. Many South African children use mobile devices daily, yet most apps primarily focus on English or international content.

Danisa remarked, “When my daughter wanted to learn isiZulu, I couldn’t find a high-quality app reflecting her identity. That was a frustrating moment, but it also highlighted a vital opportunity. If parents and educators lack appropriate tools, children miss seeing their languages represented in technology.”

Through iterative development and user feedback, Limu Lab’s initial prototype has matured into a comprehensive platform. It lets children visualise, hear, and practice words through fun characters, songs, and games.

Sibeko credited the MultiChoice Innovation Fund for its support, which extended beyond financial backing. “The leadership coaching we received was crucial. It helped us leverage our strengths as founders and approach our business as a scalable tech company rather than just a passion project.”

Since its inception, Limu Lab has achieved significant milestones, including:

  • Exceeding 1,000 app downloads within its first year.
  • Launching content on Showmax in December 2024.
  • Partnering with SuperSport Schools for a national campaign.
  • Joining the Mastercard Foundation Fellowship in March 2025.
  • Onboarding its first quintile 1-3 school platform in August 2025.

MultiChoice highlighted that these accomplishments indicate a rising demand for localised educational technology solutions that address literacy challenges in South Africa.

Despite facing scepticism as female founders without traditional coding or engineering backgrounds, Danisa and Sibeko have persevered. Sibeko stated, “People often underestimate us, assuming we couldn’t establish a credible tech business without a male CTO. However, we’ve learned that innovation doesn’t require you to code everything yourself. Having a clear vision of the problem and the right network for execution.”
