The Vodacom Group has appointed Ayman Essam as its new Chief Officer for External Affairs, effective October 1, 2025. Essam takes over from Stephen Chege, stepping into a pivotal role overseeing the company’s external affairs strategy across several key markets, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, and Tanzania.

Essam will report directly to Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub and join the Vodacom Group Executive Committee. He has over twenty years of experience in the telecommunications industry, having begun his career with Vodafone Egypt in 2001.

Throughout his tenure, Essam has made significant contributions to developing Vodafone Egypt’s legal and regulatory frameworks. His experience spans various areas, including legal affairs, regulatory engagement, external communications, government relations, corporate security, sustainability, and work with the Vodafone Foundation.

Vodacom praised Essam for his efforts, noting that he helped enhance Vodafone Egypt’s reputation as a reliable partner for the government, positioning the company as a standout performer within Vodacom’s portfolio. The announcement regarding his successor in the External Affairs and Legal Director role at Vodafone Egypt will be made soon.

CEO Joosub expressed confidence in Essam’s capabilities, stating that his extensive sector knowledge and leadership experience make him the perfect fit for the position. He also took a moment to thank Stephen Chege for his valuable contributions over the past four years.

Chege will be transitioning back to Kenya at the end of September, assuming the role of Group Chief External Affairs Officer at Safaricom. In this new position, he will oversee regulatory and external affairs, corporate communication strategies, public policy, and media relationships, among other responsibilities.
