Yokohama, Japan: Kenyan President William Ruto has commended the extensive trade and investment relationship between Kenya and Japan, referring to it as a pillar of economic development and growth of the East African nation.

Speaking during his keynote address at TICAD9, Ruto emphasised that Japan’s contributions, including more than five billion dollars in development aid, have helped transform Kenya’s transport infrastructure, energy systems, and agriculture.

The president also called for more cooperation in health, universal health coverage, and green energy, signalling that his discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had focused on accelerating Kenya’s transition to sustainable energy.

The video below shows President Ruto delivering his speech during the TICAD9 plenary, where he highlights Kenya’s role as a gateway to African markets. It emphasises the country’s commitment to enhancing relations with Japan.

The video also reflects the overall atmosphere of the conference, which has brought together 49 African leaders and representatives, Japan, the United Nations, and the African Union Commission.

The three-day event will conclude with the adoption of the Yokohama Declaration on Friday, confirming Japan’s longstanding commitment to Africa’s development since the establishment of TICAD in 1993.
