The ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) opened in Yokohama on Wednesday with leaders from Japan, Africa and the United Nations setting the stage for renewed cooperation.
In this video report [Courtesy of Viory], the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stresses the need for Africa to build stronger digital infrastructure and embrace innovation, noting that “AI must stand for Africa included.” His remarks highlight the central role of technology in shaping the continent’s growth.
The three-day summit – the first hosted in Japan since 2019 – is focusing on regional integration, industrial growth and the Indian Ocean–Africa Economic Region. Japan has signalled fresh partnerships to position Africa as a driver of global growth.
Forty-nine African states are represented at the gathering, with presidents Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, William Ruto of Kenya, Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe and Joao Lourenco of Angola among the leaders in attendance. The conference will close on Friday with the adoption of the Yokohama Declaration.
