New Subsea Cable Initiative To Boost Connectivity Across West Africa

Liberia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has unveiled a new initiative, in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalisation and the World Bank, to implement a second subsea cable linking Liberia with four other West African nations.

A recent press release from the ministry highlights that the “Second Submarine Cable Project” aims to enhance vital connectivity for Liberia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

This initiative is also designed to create redundancy for the region’s connectivity, as each of these five countries currently relies on a single international subsea connection provided by the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable.

To facilitate this project, the ECOWAS Commission’s Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU) enlisted the services of the telecom consulting firm TACTIS, which recently completed a comprehensive feasibility study for the cable.

According to the ministry’s announcement, the deployment of this second subsea cable is expected to significantly enhance the digital infrastructure of all five participating countries, ensuring reliable and robust internet access for millions of residents.
