Uganda: Universal Access Fund Secures US$23 Million To Boost Connectivity

The Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF) secured $23.2 million to strengthen digital connectivity nationwide.

Following a generous contribution of $13.3 million from MTN Uganda, the Uganda Communications Commission’s (UCC) executive director, George Nyombi Thembo, announced a further $9.9 million (UGX 37.9 billion) donation from Airtel Uganda the next day.

This contribution, which represents 2% of Airtel Uganda’s gross annual revenue for the financial year ending December 31, 2024, aligns with the Communications Act requirements and the company’s national telecommunications license.

Soumendra Sahu, managing director of Airtel Uganda, highlighted the mutual objective shared with UCC to narrow the digital gap and foster inclusive growth through improved communication services. “This contribution goes beyond just meeting a regulatory requirement. It’s a strategic investment in Uganda’s digital landscape—a vision where every Ugandan, no matter their location, can access fast, reliable, and affordable communication services,” Sahu remarked.

He emphasised that this handover is part of Airtel’s ongoing commitment to innovate and enhance inclusion through investment in ICT infrastructure. With this initiative, Airtel Uganda aims to be a key player in expanding digital access, especially in the most remote communities.

“Together with UCC, we are not merely building infrastructure but creating opportunities. Opportunities for students to learn, for farmers to stay informed about market prices, and for small businesses to grow. This partnership is all about making a tangible impact at the grassroots level,” added Soumendra.

The UCC-UCUSAF initiative, backed by the government and overseen by the UCC, aims to enhance communication services in unserved and underserved regions. It focuses on expanding broadband and voice coverage to rural areas, providing ICT access in educational institutions and healthcare facilities, and fostering digital inclusion across the country.

Thembo praised Airtel Uganda for its continued leadership and cooperative spirit. He emphasised the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in achieving the goal of universal access: “The government cannot accomplish this alone. It requires shared responsibility and intentional investments from everyone in the industry. We commend Airtel Uganda for persistently fulfilling its commitments and actively partnering with us to close the digital divide.”
