The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is excited to announce the appointment of its Group Chief Executive Officer, Nomsa Chabeli, to the Global Task Force (GTF) for Public Media. This prestigious international organisation unites leaders from significant public broadcasters to advocate for the essential values of public service media in today’s evolving global environment.

Chabeli joins a distinguished group that includes Anne Lagercrantz, the new CEO of Swedish Television (SVT), Marie-Philippe Bouchard, President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, and executives from other prominent media organisations such as the BBC, France Télévisions, ABC Australia, and RNZ (New Zealand).

Acknowledging the vital role of public service broadcasting, Chabeli emphasised the significant challenges the industry faces, stating:
“Public service broadcasters are the guardians of democracy, culture, and diversity, and our challenges have grown. We are tasked with fighting misinformation, adapting to technological shifts, and remaining relevant to increasingly diverse audiences. Therefore, our mission is more important than ever.”

Norbert Himmler, Director-General of ZDF and Chair of the Global Task Force, expressed enthusiasm over Chabeli’s inclusion, saying:
“With the mounting pressures facing public service media globally, I am thrilled to welcome Nomsa to our international roundtable. Together, we will promote and safeguard the core principles of public service broadcasting worldwide.”

The Global Task Force for Public Media is dedicated to defending and advocating for principles such as access, accuracy, accountability, creativity, impartiality, independence, and journalism excellence—values critical to a well-informed and democratic society.

Chabeli’s selection highlights SABC’s increasing impact on the international stage and reaffirms its dedication to delivering credible, independent, high-quality content to the South African public.
