OTT Streaming: Affordable, Low-Data Offerings To Expand Market Reach

As Africa continues to embrace the digital era, the demand for streaming services has skyrocketed, offering consumers across the continent access to content that ranges from entertainment to educational programming. However, the widespread adoption of streaming platforms still faces a significant hurdle—affordability and data constraints.

As preparations for the 5th Edition of the OTT Streaming Africa Summit, 18th – 19th February 2025, Cape Town, gain momentum, industry leaders are increasingly focusing on developing affordable, low-data solutions to bridge the gap between technology and the people.

A growing number of African consumers rely on mobile networks for internet connectivity, but high data costs, coupled with limited bandwidth, have hampered full access to over-the-top (OTT) services. To address this, stakeholders within the tech and broadcasting sectors are innovating to find solutions that reduce the data footprint of streaming platforms while ensuring that content delivery remains seamless and high quality.

Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, highlighted the importance of these innovations. He remarked, “For Africa to fully benefit from the global digital revolution, we must address the affordability and accessibility of streaming services. Developing low-data solutions is not only a technological necessity but a socio-economic imperative. By making these services more accessible, we empower millions of Africans with the opportunity to engage with rich and diverse content, whether for education, business, or entertainment.”

As discussions unfold at the OTT Streaming Africa Summit 2025, leaders from across the continent and beyond will explore the latest innovations in data compression, mobile-centric platforms, and collaborative efforts with telecom operators. These solutions are paving the way for a more inclusive digital landscape, ensuring that streaming services can reach the furthest corners of Africa.

The next frontier in OTT services lies in balancing accessibility with the technological advancements necessary for high-quality user experiences. The summit aims to position Africa as a global player in the streaming economy by addressing the pressing issues of data affordability and availability.
