NetOne Unveils 5G Network in Zimbabwe as Competition Heats Up with Starlink

A A

NetOne, Zimbabwe’s telecom giant, has officially launched its 5G base stations. These aim to deliver lightning-fast Internet speeds and meet the country’s growing demand for reliable, high-performance digital connectivity.

This strategic move follows Starlink’s entrance into Zimbabwe’s telecom market, which has heightened competition among the nation’s Internet service providers.

Expanding Access to High-Speed Internet

NetOne’s CEO, Engineer Raphael Mushanawani, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding 5G coverage across urban and rural areas. He highlighted how this expansion would foster new opportunities, particularly in agriculture, where smart technology solutions can help farmers increase efficiency and conserve resources.

“From digital classrooms to smart cities, 5G technology will revolutionize industries and service providers, driving automation, efficiency, and innovation across Zimbabwe,” Mushanawani stated.

Accelerating Zimbabwe’s Digital Economy

This development is part of NetOne’s broader strategy to transform Zimbabwe’s economy into a tech-driven powerhouse. In addition to launching 5G, NetOne has deployed 275 4G base stations nationwide as part of its Broadband Phase 3 initiative, which began in September 2021.

The rollout aligns with the government’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), an initiative designed to build a knowledge-based economy. Vice President Kembo Mohadi praised the launch as a significant step towards improved nationwide connectivity, boosting productivity and enabling citizens to access essential services more easily.

Smart Solutions for Homes and Businesses

To enhance security and energy efficiency, NetOne has partnered with Hikvision and Satewave Technologies to introduce Smart Surveillance and Smart Security solutions for homes and businesses. These advanced systems will provide enhanced protection through innovative monitoring technologies.

Additionally, NetOne has introduced a Smart Hybrid Power Solution, an AI-powered energy management system. This solution is designed to mitigate the impact of power outages and vandalism, ensuring that base stations remain operational and networks remain resilient.

Revolutionizing Healthcare with 5G

NetOne is also taking steps to improve healthcare access through its partnership with ZimSmart Villages, rolling out virtual hospitals in rural areas like Midlands, Mashonaland, and Harare. Initially powered by e-Band Microwave Technology, these healthcare facilities will now leverage 5G for faster, more reliable telemedicine services.
Competing with Starlink and Other Providers

The arrival of Starlink has raised the stakes for telecom providers in Zimbabwe, with many scrambling to enhance their services. For example, Liquid Home has slashed Internet prices, while TelOne has partnered with Eutelsat’s OneWeb to offer satellite Internet as part of a broader effort to stay competitive.

New government regulations have also come into play, with telecom companies facing potential fines of up to $5,000 for subpar service, according to Statutory Instrument 154 of 2024. This regulation adds further pressure on providers to maintain high-quality service amid growing competition.

With NetOne’s 5G launch, the company is positioning itself to lead Zimbabwe into the future of digital innovation, paving the way for smarter cities, efficient industries, and better healthcare.
