Reel to Reality Film Festival Returns With Spotlight On African Storytelling

The Reel to Reality Film Festival returns this October, bringing together independent filmmakers and audiences in Johannesburg and Cape Town for showcases focused on contemporary African and African diaspora storytelling.

Presented by Behind Her Lens Visuals, the festival is positioned as a platform for independent voices, using short film to explore themes including identity, historical memory, cultural heritage and artistic expression.

The Johannesburg programme will feature the Entangled showcase at Artistry on 18 October 2026. The session will explore complex human relationships, moral ambiguity and survival through a selection of short films.

Among the works being presented is Lil_ith, directed by Robin de…, which follows an online cam model whose late-night encounter with a client develops into a psychological confrontation involving digital rebellion and patriarchal pressure. Other films include Whispers of a Burning Scent, Taxi Moto and We Must Begin Again, Together, bringing stories of personal conflict, artistic resistance and redemption to the programme.

The festival will then move to Cape Town, with the A Living Archive showcase taking place at the Homecoming Centre on 25 October.

The session explores the relationship between lived experience, memory and recorded history, highlighting films that use personal and cultural narratives to examine the past.

The programme includes Lady Chief, directed by Sarah Bromley, which introduces Nana Afoakwa Kyerewa I, the only female clan chief in Kukurantumi, Ghana, and her challenge to centuries of traditional leadership.

Also featured is Dear Sikhonkwane, directed by Sihle Hlophe, a portrait celebrating one of the first siSwati authors to publish more than 40 books and his contribution to literature and language. Lost Wax, directed by Omorose Osagie, combines live action and 2D animation to connect a young girl’s disappearance with the history of stolen Benin Kingdom art.

Other films in the Cape Town programme include The Last Dance, which explores resistance to gentrification in 1990s East London, and French Touch, a political satire set in a fictional diamond-rich state.

The festival’s return reflects the growing role of independent film platforms in creating space for African filmmakers to tell stories rooted in local experiences while engaging with broader questions of identity, history and social change.

For Africa’s wider screen industry, such platforms provide an important part of the content ecosystem, giving emerging and independent filmmakers opportunities to reach audiences beyond conventional commercial and broadcast channels.
