Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has advanced preparations for the commercial rollout of 5G services by hosting a pre-application briefing for prospective bidders seeking access to spectrum in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz frequency bands.
Held at the NCA Tower, the session forms part of the regulator’s Request for Applications (RFA) process, providing interested parties with detailed guidance on the licensing framework and an opportunity to seek clarification before submitting their applications.
According to the NCA, the briefing covered key aspects of the licensing process, including spectrum availability, eligibility requirements, the evaluation and award procedures, rollout obligations, and significant market power (SMP) provisions.
Addressing participants, NCA Director General Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko said the authority is making the spectrum available at the earliest opportunity to accelerate the nationwide deployment of next-generation mobile services.
He noted that expanding access to 5G is central to the regulator’s efforts to strengthen digital connectivity, improve broadband performance and meet the growing demand for faster, more reliable communications services across the country.
Fianko also emphasised that successful bidders will be expected to comply with clearly defined rollout targets and deployment timelines contained in the licence conditions to ensure timely delivery of 5G services throughout Ghana.
The briefing attracted representatives from mobile network operators (MNOs), internet service providers (ISPs), mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and broadband wireless access (BWA) providers, reflecting broad industry interest in the upcoming spectrum assignment.
The NCA said the engagement is part of its commitment to maintaining a transparent, fair and competitive spectrum licensing process while supporting broadband expansion and advancing Ghana’s broader digital transformation objectives.
