
African broadcasters are increasingly embracing hybrid broadcast architectures that combine the reliability of on-premises operations with the scalability of cloud technologies, enabling media organisations to optimise content delivery, improve resilience, and meet the evolving demands of modern audiences.
Speaking at the recent Broadcasters Convention – East Africa 2026, Moses Kemibaro, Founder of Dotsavvy Limited, outlined how a new generation of hybrid broadcast solutions is being specifically designed for the realities of the African media environment, creating what he described as systems “built for the African signal path.”
According to Kemibaro, the hybrid-by-design approach enables broadcasters to strategically allocate workflows between local infrastructure and cloud environments, ensuring that mission-critical operations remain under direct control while leveraging the cloud for scalability, flexibility, and business continuity.
“Broadcasters no longer need to choose between traditional infrastructure and cloud innovation,” said Kemibaro. “The future lies in creating a balanced ecosystem that combines the strengths of both environments to deliver reliability, efficiency, and resilience.”
Under the hybrid model, latency-sensitive functions such as switching, master transmission, and on-air playout remain on the ground, ensuring real-time responsiveness and operational stability. Critical news production workflows and regulatory compliance requirements are also maintained locally, allowing broadcasters to retain full control over essential operations.
At the same time, cloud platforms support content ingest, archiving, media asset management, metadata processing, disaster recovery, overflow capacity, and multi-platform distribution. This enables broadcasters to expand their reach across regional, OTT, and FAST channel ecosystems while reducing infrastructure constraints.
Kemibaro emphasised that advances in connectivity and transport technologies have transformed the reliability of cloud-enabled broadcasting. Technologies such as Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) and Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST) now provide low-latency, high-quality video transmission over standard internet connections. They are already widely used in major international broadcasting events.
The increasing availability of bonded 5G connectivity further strengthens broadcast capabilities by aggregating bandwidth across multiple mobile networks, creating robust transmission pathways that support high-quality live video delivery even in challenging environments.
Resilience remains a central component of the hybrid architecture. Multi-region cloud deployments enable traffic and services to be automatically rerouted during outages, reducing downtime and ensuring continuity of operations. Continuous monitoring through 24/7 Network Operations Centres (NOCs) provides broadcasters with real-time visibility and rapid response capabilities.
Kemibaro noted that modern media organisations are increasingly integrating cloud-native platforms, such as Amagi, and other broadcast management solutions into their operations, enabling more efficient content workflows and supporting growing demand for digital distribution.
As Africa’s media sector continues its digital transformation, hybrid broadcast architectures are emerging as a practical and cost-effective solution for organisations seeking to balance operational reliability with future scalability. By combining local control with cloud-powered flexibility, broadcasters are better positioned to serve audiences across multiple platforms while maintaining the resilience required for mission-critical media operations.
