IRABAT, MOROCCO – South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns clinched the CAF Champions League title for the second time ever. They tied 1-1 with AS FAR in the second leg final at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, securing their overall triumph.

Before the game, the stadium was buzzing with energy from all the excited fans. When the game ended, it sent Sundowns supporters into a frenzy of happiness. As one ecstatic supporter, Silo Malibay, said, “We’ve been aiming for this win since 2016.” His friend Felton Vilgonsi added that this feels like a well-deserved reward after coming so close over the last ten years.

The actual match had everyone on edge. At the 40th minute, AS FAR’s Mohamed Harimat scored from a penalty kick. Yet, Sundowns fought back and swiftly tied it up, scoring just before halftime. Neither team scored again, so Sundowns won on aggregate.

The defeat was a bitter blow for AS FAR, who are trying to end a 41-year continental title drought. Ibrahim Al-Haddad, a supporter, said the final came down to small margins. He added that while the team tried their best, they ultimately missed some key details needed to win the trophy.

This victory is just the third for a South African club in Africa’s top club prize. It joins the ranks of Orlando Pirates’ 1995 win and Sundowns’ previous triumph in 2016.
