BUNIA, DRC – Four nurses from the Evangelical Medical Centre made history by beating Ebola and getting discharged. This big step shows progress in tackling the outbreak.

The ceremony was captured on video. There, the nurses received recovery certificates. Notable figures in health, like Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, showed up. Plus, there were folks from the Africa CDC.

Survivor Mika Maladie couldn’t hide his joy. “I’m thankful,” he said. “After treatment, I feel great. The doctors helped me get rid of all symptoms.” For Mika, this marks moving past tough days.

Another nurse, Furaha Ntikanila, praised the medics while reflecting on how many others lost the fight. “We’re glad to be better,” she noted, “But we remember those who didn’t make it and the sick ones still fighting.”

Professor Yap Boum, an Incident Manager at Africa CDC, says these recoveries show definite progress. Still, big challenges await, especially concerning global teamwork. Right now, what matters most is getting consistent help from around the world to support the government.

On May 15, the DRC and Uganda announced an Ebola outbreak, identified as Bundibugyo virus disease. The WHO then declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. Currently, the DRC reports 125 cases and seven deaths, while Uganda confirms nine cases and one death. Also, the DRC is tracking 906 potential cases.
