Botswana is actively pursuing international collaborations in artificial intelligence (AI), computing, data centre infrastructure, and cutting-edge digital technologies to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
David Tshere, the minister of communications and innovation, is currently on a working visit to China and Austria, with activities scheduled until April 19. His journey includes participation in the 14th China Information Technology Expo 2026, which takes place in Shenzhen from Thursday to Saturday.
This prominent information and communications technology (ICT) expo highlights the entire industry value chain and features high-level discussions on policies and industry trends.
According to Tshere’s office, the expo will provide an invaluable platform for engaging in global policy conversations aimed at strengthening national cloud infrastructure, increasing broadband access, improving digital service delivery, and developing governance frameworks for digital innovation ecosystems.
Additionally, Tshere plans to visit Huawei’s headquarters, where he will participate in technical sessions focused on large-scale digital infrastructure development, AI integration, and the establishment of sustainable ICT ecosystems aligned with Botswana’s national digital priorities.
These activities are seen as vital opportunities to forge partnerships that will support Botswana’s digital transformation program and help build digital and innovation skills among the youth, thereby improving employment prospects.
Following his engagements in China, Tshere will travel to Vienna, Austria, for meetings tied to the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The minister’s visits are part of Botswana’s comprehensive strategy to expedite its digital transformation, strengthen international partnerships, and position the country within the evolving global technology and innovation landscape.
