Nollywood filmmaker and actress Iyabo Ojo has made headlines with her latest film, “The Return of Arinzo,” which has achieved a remarkable box office milestone. The movie grossed an impressive US$76,000 during its opening weekend, becoming the highest-grossing film over the Easter holiday period in 2026.

This sequel has set a new record for Nollywood, with the biggest opening weekend for a sequel to date and the second-highest opening performance of the year. The announcement came from the distributor, Filmone Entertainment, which shared the film’s success on social media.

The excitement surrounding “The Return of Arinzo” reflects a growing trend in Nigeria’s cinema landscape, particularly during prime release windows such as the Easter holidays. Observers attribute the film’s strong performance to effective marketing and a palpable anticipation from audiences familiar with the franchise.

The film, produced by Fespris Production, has drawn substantial crowds in major cities, with audiences flocking to theatres to experience the story. The plot centres on a rising star who returns home with his fiancée to support his father’s presidential campaign. However, her arrival exposes a long-hidden scandal linked to a powerful political figure, leading to revelations that entangle her in a web of betrayal and ultimately unravel the mysteries surrounding Arinze’s untimely demise.

Directed by Iyabo Ojo herself, “The Return of Arinzo” features a diverse ensemble cast, including Olukanmi Abayomi, Nenesenor Abloso, and Mercy Aigbe. This wide-ranging cast reflects the film’s broad appeal within the West African market.

Ojo’s latest triumph further cements her status as a significant figure in film production, signalling her emergence as part of the new wave of Nigerian filmmakers successfully creating commercially viable content. Following the pandemic, the gradual recovery and expansion of cinema admissions and revenues make such successful openings critical indicators of the industry’s health.

Building on her past successes, Ojo’s “Labake Olododo: The Warrior Lord” earned over US$145,000, showcasing her ability to connect with audiences. With the remarkable success of “The Return of Arinzo,” it is clear that Iyabo Ojo is paving the way for Nollywood’s future.
