Aman Fissehatsion, the founder and Chief Executive of EBS Television in Ethiopia, has sadly passed away after a period of illness, according to a statement from the network.
The broadcaster confirmed on Wednesday that Aman passed away while undergoing medical treatment.
As a pioneering figure in the media landscape of the Horn of Africa, Aman significantly contributed to the modernisation of Ethiopian broadcasting, creating a vital link between the country and its extensive global diaspora.
A Visionary Leader Remembered
The management and staff of EBS expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a man they regarded as a “pillar of strength” and a visionary leader who played an “irreplaceable role” in the evolution of Ethiopia’s media industry.
“Although today we mourn his loss as a family and as a network, Aman’s vision will endure,” the statement highlighted.
Connecting the Diaspora
Established in 2008, EBS (Ethiopian Broadcasting Service) is renowned for transforming satellite television for Ethiopians worldwide.
Under Aman’s guidance, the station shifted its programming focus to lifestyle, entertainment, and cultural content, moving away from the heavily state-centric news cycles that had long characterised Ethiopian media.
Thanks to his innovative approach, EBS emerged as one of the most-watched Ethiopian channels worldwide, renowned for its high production quality and its ability to connect the experiences of Ethiopians at home and abroad.
Since his passing, tributes have poured in from journalists, public figures, and viewers alike, many of whom credit Aman with paving the way for a new generation of creative professionals in Ethiopia.
