Mali has taken a significant step towards achieving digital sovereignty with the inauguration of a Tier III data centre during the country’s third annual Digital Week.
The event was spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Economy, and Administration Modernisation, under the leadership of Minister Alhamdou Ag Ilyène. The facility, known as the National Data Centre, was officially launched over the weekend in the company of fellow digital economy ministers from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).
The government highlighted that this centre will offer secure hosting for the Malian state’s critical data, electronic administration platforms, and public digital services and will facilitate shared digital infrastructure within the AES region, which includes Niger and Burkina Faso.
Officials pointed out that this initiative marks a pivotal shift away from reliance on foreign infrastructure and external cloud services. It aims to enhance the performance, resilience, and cybersecurity of digital public services.
This development establishes a solid foundation for advancing e-government, artificial intelligence, digital financial services, and both national and confederate digital platforms.
Furthermore, the Ministry emphasised that the AES members collectively acknowledge the political and strategic significance of this accomplishment. They assert that the data centre aligns with the vision of the AES heads of state, who have prioritised digital sovereignty as integral to national security, defence, and economic autonomy.
AES ministers assert that mastering the hosting, processing, and protection of national data is essential for regaining control over public decision-making and safeguarding sensitive information for both states and citizens. This initiative aims to build a secure and resilient digital space that aligns with the alliance’s sovereign objectives.
Consequently, this infrastructure represents a significant move away from models of digital dependency and is a decisive step towards fostering an integrated, supportive, and autonomous digital ecosystem in the Sahel.
“The inauguration of this Tier III data centre signifies a structural advancement for the attractiveness of the AES region, offering a trusted environment that benefits administrations, businesses, startups, and technical partners while promoting innovation, investment, and sustainable digital transformation across the Confederation of States,” stated a release from the ministry.
