Nigeria: Telecom Growth – ALTON Chairman Highlights Investments, Innovations, And Industry Progress

Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), recently highlighted the positive growth trajectory of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

During the launch of Nigeria’s first Digital Museum, Engr. Adebayo lauded IHS Towers for their initiative, emphasising that this effort exemplifies the telecommunications industry’s dedication to Nigeria’s progress. He remarked that by investing in preserving Nigeria’s heritage while advancing future infrastructure, IHS Towers has set a commendable standard for corporate responsibility.

On the current state of telecommunications, Engr. Adebayo noted that following the resolution of sustainability issues earlier this year, new investments in the sector have surged—marking the highest levels seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic. ALTON members are actively enhancing their networks by building new sites, optimising existing infrastructure, and transitioning more connections from outdated radio links to high-speed fibre.

He also discussed measures Tower Companies (TowerCos) took to bolster security at telecom sites, including adding trackers to removable batteries and generators to curb vandalism and theft. He urged the public to refrain from purchasing suspected stolen equipment from telecom sites.

Engr. Adebayo emphasised the sector’s commitment to workforce development: “We are focused on training our staff to adapt to new technologies. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has implemented stringent service level requirements, and we aim to meet and exceed them. While network optimisation may lead to some service interruptions, we ask for the public’s understanding, as these improvements will ultimately benefit the user experience nationwide.”

Regarding governance in the industry, he expressed enthusiasm for the recently inaugurated NCC Board led by Mr. Idris Olorunimbe. “We are optimistic about Mr. Idris’s appointment. His esteemed reputation and the capability of the new Executive Management Team, headed by Dr. Aminu Maida, give us confidence that the sector is poised for sustainability and growth,” he stated.

Engr. Adebayo also celebrated the rebranding of Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (EMTS) to T2, viewing it as a significant accomplishment for the industry. EMTS is a crucial member of ALTON, and their rebranding as T2 is a positive development that will enhance investor confidence and collaboration in the industry. It signifies promising times ahead for us,” he added.

Addressing the topic of Right of Way (RoW), he warned that investments flourish only in conducive environments. “The digital revolution is accelerating. States that impose unfavourable conditions for telecom operations risk falling behind. We won’t continually seek cooperation. If deployment becomes unwelcome, investments will migrate to more supportive states, leaving residents of less friendly areas with limited connectivity. We urge all stakeholders to collaborate with us to ensure equitable progress in this digital transformation.”

On the matter of multiple taxation, Engr. Adebayo commended the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for ongoing reforms to streamline the tax system. He emphasised that these reforms would alleviate the burden of multiple taxes, benefiting small and medium-sized enterprises by promoting entrepreneurship and attracting investment.

“We look forward to implementing these reforms in January 2026, as we believe the current burden of over 56 different taxes and levies will soon be eliminated,” he stated.

In conclusion, Engr. Adebayo expressed gratitude to all industry stakeholders and reaffirmed ALTON’s dedication to Nigeria’s development: “The ongoing transformation in our sector is unprecedented in recent years. We appreciate the NCC leadership, extend our congratulations to the new Board under Mr. Idris Olorunimbe, and anticipate more significant achievements in the future. The industry is advancing, and we are excited for what lies ahead.”
