The Ghanaian government has issued a strict ultimatum to DStv: Reduce subscription fees by 30% by Thursday, August 7, 2025, or face the revocation of its broadcasting license. Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George announced that the National Communications Authority would promptly initiate suspension proceedings if DStv fails to comply.
In recent developments, Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has implemented a daily fine of US$922.00 against MultiChoice Ghana for not providing comprehensive subscription pricing information. This penalty took effect on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Minister Samuel Nartey George confirmed the enforcement of the fine after a meeting with DStv executives. He noted that the pay-TV service was granted an extension until August 11 to submit the required details, but failed to meet this new deadline.
The Ministry had requested a breakdown of bouquet pricing, tax elements, and comparative pricing from at least six other African countries. Minister George highlighted that this data is crucial for facilitating a fair discussion to make DStv subscriptions more affordable for Ghanaians.
“I agreed to hold off on initiating charges until Monday, but as of today’s meeting, the regulator has confirmed that the information is still outstanding. This makes meaningful dialogue impossible,” he stated.
George cautioned that fines would continue to accrue until the complete information is received. He also reminded DStv that the Ministry has the authority under the Electronic Communications Act to freeze accounts or take further actions if necessary.
Furthermore, the Ministry has set September 6 as the deadline for DStv to agree to the price reduction. If an agreement is not reached by that date, the company risks losing its operating license in Ghana.
