Abel N’guessan Kouame, the founder of Afrika Toon, is at the forefront of a dynamic movement in African animation. Based in Abidjan, Afrika Toon has become a key player in presenting authentic African narratives that resonate with audiences locally and globally.
With a host of exciting projects underway, including the fifth season of its flagship series “La Petite Pokou” and a new collaboration with TV5Monde titled “Gbassman” featuring a young Ivorian superhero, Kouame is dedicated to creating stories that reflect local culture while touching on universal themes. Another upcoming project, “Foot Go,” tells the tale of a young girl who overcomes gender barriers to form her soccer team, showcasing the power of determination and local folklore.
Kouame is keen to forge international partnerships to expand Afrika Toon’s reach. Currently collaborating with networks like Canal+, RTI, and TV5Monde, he envisions a future that includes licensing, merchandise, and books, enabling African children to connect with local heroes like Pokou as they do with international icons.
Despite the potential, challenges remain. The animation sector in Africa struggles with limited funding and infrastructure. Kouame emphasises the need for investment from local broadcasters and governments, stating that even modest contributions can significantly impact the industry across the continent. He believes self-reliance is crucial for sustainable growth and encourages government support for cultural projects.
Looking ahead, Kouame aims for Afrika Toon to become a leading global animation company, with aspirations to open studios in various African nations and the U.S. He remains optimistic about Africa’s storytelling potential, predicting that major players like Netflix and Disney will return to the continent, recognising its rich market for animation. With passion and ambition, Afrika Toon is set to shine in animation.
