Fully Digital Broadcasting In Africa: Realities, Challenges, And Opportunities

The transition to full digital broadcasting is transforming East Africa’s media landscape. Over the past decade, the region has progressed significantly, having completed analogue switch-offs, rolled out Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) services on a large scale, and adopted satellite and online platforms. However, the journey towards a full digital world remains complicated, with tremendous untapped potential.

While East African countries have led digital migration efforts, with analogue switch-offs and a more competitive media environment, rural areas still face limited access. The digital divide persists, driven by the unaffordability of devices, inconsistent coverage, and a lack of digital literacy. Additionally, while DTT and satellite infrastructure are in place, the full integration of IPTV, mobile TV, and OTT services is still evolving.

Despite these challenges, broadcasters, content creators, and technologists are seizing new opportunities. Digital platforms are expanding their reach to diverse audiences, while the convergence of broadcast and broadband enables mobile-first content delivery.

Investment in local productions is fostering cultural pride and economic growth. Digital broadcasting generates new revenue streams through subscriptions, pay-per-view, targeted ads, and syndication. Regional collaboration promises to create a vibrant, interconnected media market.

The Broadcasters Convention – East Africa 2025, to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, will be a key platform for addressing the region’s digital broadcasting transition. The event will unite industry leaders, regulators, and technologists to explore the milestones achieved, persistent challenges, and emerging opportunities.

Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, stated, “The shift to fully digital broadcasting is more than just a technological change—it is a leap towards greater inclusivity, innovation, and growth. The Broadcasters Convention will ensure East Africa leads purposefully in the digital era.”

The Broadcasters Convention aims to inspire action, driving stakeholders to align their efforts, accelerate digitisation, and establish East Africa as a leader in the digital broadcasting sector.
