LAWO Drives IP Broadcast Transformation Ahead Of Broadcast Media Convention In Kampala, Uganda

Broadcasters and media content publishers across Africa are preparing to gather for the Broadcasting and Digital Media Convention 2025—East Africa, which will be held from 27 to 28 May 2025 at the Four Points By Sheraton in Kampala, Uganda.

LAWO, a leader in broadcast infrastructure solutions that help broadcasting stations move beyond traditional SDI and hardware-bound setups, is among the key technology partners driving this transformation.

Broadcasters are increasingly looking for systems that are more agile, scalable, and suited to modern content demands. LAWO’s IP-native platforms allow broadcasters to design and manage production environments that are flexible, cloud-enabled, and ready for multiplatform delivery.

Ralf Schimmel, Sales Director for Africa at Lawo, believes this transition is more concerned with technology than anything else.

“Broadcasters today are no longer confined to static, hardware-defined studios. With IP, the entire infrastructure becomes a living, dynamic ecosystem. Lawo is proud to be helping customers across Africa navigate this shift – not just with technology, but with a vision for long-term operational resilience.”

The move to IP also enables more innovative workflows. Lawo’s “radio-in-a-bag” concept shows how portable, high-quality broadcasting is now possible anywhere with an IP connection. With a laptop, intuitive software, an I/O box, and a microphone, radio teams can produce and air shows from the field over 4G or tethered networks. In practice, this means a presenter can host a show from home while a field reporter conducts interviews live on location. These workflows, once unimaginable, are now a reality across parts of Africa.

Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa and event convener, sees this as a vital shift for the region’s media development. “The democratisation of content production is one of the most exciting outcomes of this transition. Lawo’s technology empowers established broadcasters and up-and-coming creators to deliver world-class content without the limitations of legacy infrastructure.”

“With Lawo, the move to IP is not just a technical upgrade – it’s a pathway to operational freedom, creative flexibility, and sustainable broadcast models built for the future.” he asserts.
