Nigeria: Catholic TV Channel Expands Its Reach Across Africa

Catholic Television Nigeria, owned by the Catholic Church, has begun expanding its broadcast reach across Africa via its satellite platform.

According to the station’s Director, Father Patrick Alumuku, the channel commenced full continental transmission during the Lenten season and has the potential to reach over 281 million Catholics across Africa.

Father Alumuku emphasised that the channel’s programming extends beyond religion to include topics relevant to African viewers, such as agriculture, education, social welfare, and security. “We offer a well-rounded range of programmes that set us apart from other Catholic channels on MultiChoice and other platforms,” he said.

Unlike many religious broadcasters, Catholic Television in Nigeria is not Vatican-funded. Its growth and sustainability rely on support from local Catholic communities. Donations like solar panels have helped maintain uninterrupted broadcasts, reflecting strong grassroots commitment.

Father Alumuku credits the channel’s success to African Church leaders’ vision and African Catholics’ collective dedication. “This is a channel by Africans, for Africans,” he noted. Whether in Nigeria, Cameroon, or beyond, it belongs to those who believe in and support it.
Catholic Television Nigeria is a unique voice in African broadcasting—rooted in faith yet attuned to the continent’s broader social and developmental realities.
