Botswana’s film industry has reached a significant milestone with the launch of the first African adaptation of the acclaimed series “Liar.” Produced by Botswana Ignite in partnership with All3Media International, the six-episode thriller is anticipated to be completed by early April 2025.
Duncan Irvine, program director of Botswana Ignite, emphasised the achievement, stating, “We have a vibrant pool of young filmmakers whose creative energy has culminated in a distinctly African rendition of this impactful narrative.” The adaptation features notable actor Motsoaledi Setumo, recognised for her roles in “The Wife” and “Soweto Love Story,” alongside Maxwell Dichi from “Generations” and “Muvhango.” Filming was completed in November 2024, entirely based in Gaborone, and retains the original series’ themes of consent and gender dynamics.
Lizzy Ribeiro from All3Media International commented, “We are excited that our talented partners at Botswana Ignite have created such a high-quality adaptation of our global hit.” Originally developed by Two Brothers Pictures for ITV in the UK, “Liar” has inspired 15 adaptations worldwide, including those in India, Italy, France, and Germany.
Supported by the government in collaboration with Steve Harvey Global, Botswana Ignite is crucial in promoting the growth of the country’s film and television industry, showcasing Botswana’s emerging role in the global entertainment landscape.
