Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, And Sudatel Unveil Major Fiber Optic Network

Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group have announced the launch of the Horizon Fiber Initiative, a visionary project to establish a high-capacity terrestrial fibre optic network connecting Africa with Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world.

This transformative partnership is set to revolutionize regional and global connectivity by delivering faster, more reliable, and resilient communication services. Leveraging these three telecom leaders’ combined expertise and infrastructure, the initiative underscores a shared commitment to driving Africa’s digital transformation.

The Horizon Fiber Initiative seeks to address critical challenges posed by submarine cables in the shallow waters of the Red Sea, which are vulnerable to disruptions from anchoring incidents and conflicts. By creating a secure and efficient terrestrial fibre network, the initiative ensures uninterrupted global communication services, benefiting millions of users across continents. With key features such as reduced latency, route diversification, and cost-efficient operations, this initiative promises to enhance connectivity for hyperscalers, content providers, and end-users.

Aligned with Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy 2030, the Horizon Fiber Initiative represents a bold step toward bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth. By driving innovation, promoting seamless international trade, and empowering local industries, the project positions Africa as a pivotal player in the global digital economy. This partnership is not just about connectivity; it is about redefining Africa’s role in the digital era and enabling sustainable growth across the continent.

Scheduled for completion by April 2025, the Horizon Fiber Initiative reinforces the unwavering dedication of Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group to regional collaboration and technological advancement. These operators are paving the way for a digitally empowered Africa, positioning the continent to flourish in an increasingly interconnected global ecosystem. We are committed to bridging the digital divide, fostering innovation, and driving Africa’s digital transformation toward a future of boundless opportunities and growth.
