Ghanaian cinema has reached an exciting new milestone with the world premiere of “The Fisherman,” produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie from Luu Vision Media, at the prestigious 81st Venice International Film Festival. Crafted by writer and director Zoey Martinson, the film proudly represents Ghana as its first official selection at this renowned festival, captivating a sold-out audience and receiving heartfelt standing ovations.

Although screened out of competition, “The Fisherman” garnered significant acclaim by winning the esteemed Fellini Medal, part of UNESCO’s International Council for Film, Television, and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT) Enrico Fulchignoni Prize. This award, celebrating its 36th year, honours films that reflect UNESCO’s ideals of peace and tolerance, emphasizing the film’s broad cultural relevance and significance.

Martinson’s narrative is drawn from her life experiences in Keta, weaving an authentic Ghanaian tale that explores themes such as resilience, community, and coastal livelihoods representative of Ghana’s rich heritage. Filmed entirely in Ghana, the movie showcases emerging local talents, including Ricky Adeleyitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi, alongside Nigerian actor Dulo Harris. The impressive cast is rounded out by Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, Dorothy Konadu, Mynna Otoo, Adjeezay, Adwoa Akoto, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, Papa Osei, Andrew Adote, and Shadrack Agyare.

“The Fisherman” boasts exceptional artistic quality thanks to a talented crew, including cinematographer Adam Carboni, costume designer Gifty Mawuena Sossavi, and production designer Douglas Baiden. The film is edited by Jasmin Way, with a poignant score composed by Avi Amon. Nurudeen Tahiru and Daria Amai Shelton crafted its stunning visual effects, which were complemented by casting director Mawuko Kuadzi.

Reflecting on the film’s premiere at Venice, producer Kofi Owusu-Afriyie shared, “The Venice premiere was a surreal moment for us. To see this story resonate with such a diverse audience is a triumph for Ghanaian cinema and the African film community.”

Produced by Luu Vision Media alongside Owusu-Afriyie and King Luu with Korey Jackson, “The Fisherman” is currently seeking distribution. For updates on the film’s journey, audiences are encouraged to follow its Instagram page at The Fisherman Film.
