In preparation for the upcoming Broadcast And Digital Media Convention 2024, set to take place from 08 – 10 October 2024 at the Swakopmund Legacy Hotel, Namibia, BMA sat down with Roger Gertze, Managing Director of MultiChoice Namibia.

In an engaging conversation with BMA, Roger Gertze shared his thoughts on the current state of the industry, the obstacles it faces, and his hopes for what participants will gain from this vital event. Mr Gertze discussed the challenges faced by African broadcast professionals and highlighted the strategies his organisation has employed to navigate the digital transformation successfully.

BMA: What influenced your decision to agree to participate in this year’s Broadcast And Digital Media Convention Africa 2024?

Roger: The Broadcast and Digital Media Convention Africa 2024 is a great opportunity to share insights and trends from a local perspective, engage with industry experts, and network with a wide range of professionals. Therefore, as Africa’s leading broadcaster and most loved storyteller, it was crucial for us to share successful strategies while enhancing the visibility of the MultiChoice brand.

BMA: Please tell us what KEY CHALLENGES, in your opinion, Africa’s Broadcast Media professionals are facing in today media ecosystem?

Roger: Broadcast media professionals are still finding their feet when it comes to navigating the new and unfamiliar digital space. Many technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence, have been introduced into broadcasting, so I feel the need to invest in training. Another area facing uncertainty is the new streaming platforms versus linear television—broadcasters are challenged with attracting and retaining audiences from a traditional viewing landscape compared to a digital one.

BMA: In your opinion / experience, how do you think / or do you see these challenges being overcome or resolved?

Roger: MultiChoice has invested internally in tailored educational platforms and regular training sessions to help employees achieve digital transformation in their respective fields.

The introduction of Showmax, MultiChoice’s revolutionary streaming platform, has also changed streaming in Africa. With this platform, 44 African countries have access, and millions can now watch the Premier League, for example, wherever they are—in real time.

BMA: With all said, tell us what you hope colleagues will take away from this industry event?

Roger: Our goal is to emphasise MultiChoice’s role as Africa’s most loved storyteller who puts customers’ needs at the heart of everything we do. We are excited to share the developments regarding AI with new and existing clients while sharing best practices regarding our digital transformation strategies that have been successfully implemented across Africa.
